Depression comes in multiple forms, which together are known as Depressive Disorders. It is one of the most common mental health conditions. About 1 in 6 New Zealanders experience depression at some point in their lives.
Symptoms of depression can include
These symptoms are noticeable to others and cause major disruption in your life.
Many people with depression use a combination of medication and therapy to make life easier. As a psychologist I offer therapy, but am not authorised to prescribe medication.
You are free to decide whether you want therapy, medication, or both. If you prefer not to take medication, I generally suggest 4 to 6 weeks of therapy followed by a review. If you have positive changes in mood, feelings and behaviour in this time, it indicates that therapy alone may be effective for you at this point. If there is no change in your condition, I may suggest you reconsider medication, but the decision remains yours.
I use a range of therapies to work with depression, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
(ACT) and Mindfulness. The combination depends on what suits you.
“I was in a dark space when I came to see Lisa, and what an interesting journey. Lisa is amazing and always professional and
caring. She has warmth and a great sense of humour, is empathetic and practical. Lisa is adept at getting me to think, and together we work
through my fears and anxiety which can be hard work. During this time my anxiety has lessened, I feel happy and have gained confidence and a
sense of worth. I look forward to my sessions with Lisa, love the chats and always the laughter, a healer.
See Lisa and feel the support and growth along the way.”
My aim is to help you understand your depression, and teach you skills to manage your symptoms. Depression may be caused by underlying life issues – in this case, we explore those issues and may be able to resolve them.
The amount of therapy required depends on the degree and the causes of your depression. In many cases, you will see progress after 6 to
12 sessions and be well equipped to self-manage your symptoms.
